Heavy Planetary Carrier and Large Format Transmission Components — Precision Machined to Customer Drawing

SMI manufactures heavy planetary carriers and large format transmission components to customer drawing and technical specification — covering planet carriers, ring gears, output flanges and gear shaft assemblies at weights and dimensions beyond the envelope of standard industrial reducer supply. The planet carrier shown below — Φ680 × 620mm, 810KG — is representative of the scale and precision machining capability SMI applies to heavy transmission component supply.

Every component in this category is produced to the customer’s own engineering drawing. Material grade, dimensional tolerances, heat treatment specification, surface finish and inspection requirements are all defined by the customer’s design — SMI’s role is to manufacture to that specification with the casting, forging and precision machining capability required to achieve it consistently.

Representative Component — Planet Carrier Φ680 × 620mm, 810KG

The planet carrier is the most structurally demanding component in a planetary transmission system. It carries the full output torque of the reducer, supports the planet gear bearing loads on all pin positions simultaneously, and must maintain precise dimensional relationships between pin bores across its full service life under cyclic loading.

At Φ680 × 620mm and 810KG, the component shown represents a transmission system capable of handling several thousand kilowatts of input power — consistent with the drive system requirements of energy drilling equipment, large ball mills, tunnel boring machine cutter head drives and heavy marine lifting machinery. Key manufacturing requirements for a component at this scale include:

  • Casting integrity — at 810KG, internal soundness of the casting is critical. Any porosity or inclusion concentration at the hub or pin boss locations will initiate fatigue cracking under the cyclic torque loads of heavy drive service. SMI’s casting practice for heavy components includes controlled pouring, riser design and post-casting inspection to verify internal quality before machining begins
  • Pin bore positional accuracy — the angular and radial position of each planet pin bore determines the load sharing between planet gears. Positional error concentrates load on individual planets and reduces the effective torque capacity of the assembly. SMI machines pin bores to the positional tolerances specified in the customer’s drawing, verified by CMM inspection
  • Hub bore concentricity — the central hub bore carries the output shaft or sun gear shaft bearing. Concentricity relative to the pin bore pitch circle is machined and verified to drawing tolerance
  • Flange face flatness and bolt circle accuracy — the output flange face and bolt circle are machined to the assembly tolerances required for correct mating with the adjacent shaft or housing component

Planet Carriers

Cast steel planet carriers from small industrial sizes up to 810KG and above — machined to customer drawing for single-stage and multi-stage planetary systems. Hub bore, pin bore positions, flange face and bolt circle all machined to drawing tolerance. CMM dimensional verification as standard on large format components.

Internal Ring Gears

Large format internal ring gears — cast or forged blanks, internal gear cut to specified module, tooth profile accuracy grade and face width. Heat treatment to specified surface hardness. Ring gear housing bore and mounting features machined to assembly drawing. Available in through-hardened and case-hardened configurations to customer specification.

Output Flanges and Carrier Flanges

Heavy output flanges and carrier flanges — precision machined bolt circle, mating face flatness and bore dimensions to assembly drawing tolerances. Flange face machining to the surface finish specified for the sealing or mating interface requirements of the customer’s application.

Planet Gear Shaft Assemblies

Planet gear shaft assemblies — external gear cutting to specified module and accuracy grade, shaft journal machining to bearing fit dimensions, spline features to customer profile specification. Heat treatment and surface finish to drawing. Available as individual components or as matched sets for a complete planet gear stage.

Sun Gears and Input Shaft Assemblies

Sun gear and input shaft assemblies — external gear cutting, journal machining and spline or coupling features to customer drawing. Case hardening or nitriding to specified surface hardness and case depth. Balanced to customer requirement for high-speed input shaft applications.

Energy and Drilling Equipment

Heavy planetary transmission components for the drive systems of energy drilling and production equipment — including drawworks transmission systems, mud pump drives and rotary table drives for oil and gas drilling applications. These applications demand high torque density, resistance to shock loading and consistent dimensional accuracy across the full component set to ensure reliable operation under the demanding conditions of drilling service.

Mining and Mineral Processing

Large format planet carriers, ring gears and output flanges for ball mill drives, SAG mill drives, crusher drives and mine hoist transmission systems. Cutter head planetary systems operate under extreme and variable load conditions — requiring robust casting design, controlled heat treatment and precise pin bore geometry to maintain load sharing across all planet positions throughout the service life of the drive.

Agriculture Gearbox Design and Manufacturing — Rotary Lawn Mower Series

SMI’s engineering team designs and manufactures agricultural gearboxes from initial concept through to finished product — covering 3D CAD design, casting, precision machining and assembly. The rotary lawn mower gearbox series shown on this page represents one area of SMI’s mechanical design and manufacturing capability, with configurations supplied to agricultural equipment manufacturers in Canada and other markets.

All gearbox configurations are developed to customer specification. SMI does not supply standard catalogue products — every configuration is engineered to the specific input/output requirements, mounting geometry and performance specification of the customer’s equipment.

Design and Manufacturing Capability

In-House CAD Engineering

SMI’s engineering team develops full 3D CAD models of gearbox assemblies before manufacture — covering gear geometry, shaft layout, bearing selection, housing design and assembly clearances. The sectioned CAD model shown above illustrates the multi-stage gear train and internal layout typical of SMI’s rotary mower gearbox designs. In-house design capability means SMI can work from a customer’s functional specification or performance requirement, not just from a finished drawing.

Casting and Housing Manufacture

Gearbox housings are manufactured in-house from aluminium alloy castings — as shown in the production image above. Casting in-house gives SMI direct control over dimensional accuracy, wall thickness consistency and surface finish quality, which are critical to gear alignment and bearing life in the finished assembly.

Precision Machining and Assembly

Machined bores, bearing seats, shaft features and mounting faces are produced to the tolerances required for correct gear mesh and bearing fit. Final assembly and functional verification are carried out before despatch.

A power take-off (PTO) shaft transmits engine power from a tractor or vehicle to an attached implement or driven machine. It is one of the most fundamental mechanical interfaces in agricultural equipment — standardised in dimensions and operating speed to allow interchangeability across tractor and implement brands worldwide.

SMI manufactures PTO shafts, yokes, safety shields and associated driveline components to customer drawing and specification. Production covers casting, machining, surface treatment and export packaging — with finished assemblies supplied to agricultural equipment manufacturers and distributors in Europe and other global markets, including supply to customers in Germany.

Technical Background — PTO Standards and Configurations

Agricultural PTO shafts are standardised under ISO 500, which defines shaft dimensions, spline profiles, operating speeds and safety requirements. Three principal configurations are in common use:

Complete PTO shaft assemblies comprising inner and outer telescoping tubes, universal joints, yokes and safety shields. Shaft length, tube diameter, joint angle capacity and safety shield type are specified to the customer’s implement design. Standard yellow finish or alternative surface treatments available.

Yokes and Quick-Release Connectors

Cast and forged yoke components in standard and custom configurations — including push-pin, bolt-on and quick-release locking types. Spline bore dimensions manufactured to ISO 500 or customer specification. Available in standard silver/natural finish or painted to customer colour requirement.

Safety Shields

Plastic safety shields for PTO shaft assemblies — manufactured to ISO 500 safety requirements. Standard black configuration or custom colour. Shield geometry designed to the specific shaft assembly dimensions.

Spare Parts and Sub-Components

Individual universal joints, cross kits, bearing cups and yoke components available as spare parts supply alongside complete shaft assemblies. All parts manufactured to the same drawing and specification as the original assembly.

Planetary Reducer and Precision Gear Components — Custom Manufacturing to Customer Specification

SMI manufactures planetary reducers and precision gear components to customer drawing and technical specification — covering gear cutting, precision machining, heat treatment and assembly. Planetary reducer configurations cover a wide ratio range with multiple output shaft options, supplied to industrial equipment manufacturers and OEM customers in heavy machinery, mining, energy and marine sectors.

As with all SMI mechanical component supply, finished products are produced to the customer’s own engineering drawing or specification. SMI does not supply standard catalogue reducers — every configuration is engineered to the specific ratio, torque, shaft geometry and mounting requirements of the customer’s application.

Planetary Reducer — Configuration and Capability

A planetary gear system consists of a central sun gear, a set of planet gears rotating around it, a ring gear enclosing the assembly, and a planet carrier transmitting the output torque. The compact, coaxial layout of the planetary system delivers high torque density relative to its physical size — making it the preferred reducer configuration for space-constrained and high-torque applications across heavy industry.

Custom configurations outside the standard range — higher torque ratings, alternative shaft dimensions, modified mounting geometry or specific material grades — are available on request. SMI application engineers will confirm the appropriate configuration at the enquiry stage.


Components Manufactured

The image above shows four core planetary reducer components manufactured by SMI — illustrating the precision machining capability applied across the full component set:

  • Output flange / planet carrier flange — precision bolt circle and mating face, machined to assembly drawing tolerances
  • Ring gear — internal gear cutting to specified module, tooth profile and accuracy grade
  • Planet carrier assembly — bearing bore machining, planet pin holes and structural body
  • Planet gear shaft assembly — external gear cutting, shaft journals and spline features to drawing

Herringbone Gear Capability

In addition to planetary reducer components, SMI manufactures herringbone gears — a double helical gear configuration where two sets of oppositely angled helical teeth are combined side by side. The herringbone geometry cancels the axial thrust loads inherent in single helical gears, allowing high power transmission without the substantial thrust bearing requirements that helical gears impose. This characteristic makes herringbone gears particularly well suited to high-torque gearboxes in heavy machinery and marine propulsion applications.

Herringbone gears are more demanding to manufacture than equivalent spur or helical gears — requiring precise alignment of the opposing helical flanks at the centreline junction. SMI’s gear cutting capability covers this geometry, with finished gears supplied to the accuracy grade and material specification required by the customer’s application.

Agricultural Gearbox — Rotary Mower, Tiller and Farm Equipment Series, 30HP to 300HP

SMI has been manufacturing agricultural gearboxes since 1996 — covering rotary mower series, rotary tiller series, rice harvester series and grain transportation and storage series across a power range from 30HP to 300HP. Finished gearboxes and OEM components are supplied to agricultural equipment manufacturers and distributors in North America, Australia, Europe and Asia-Pacific.

All gearbox configurations are produced to customer drawing or specification. Standard series configurations are available, and custom ratios, shaft dimensions, mounting geometry and power ratings are offered to meet the specific requirements of each customer’s equipment design.


Product Series

Rotary Mower Gearbox Series

SMI’s rotary mower gearbox series covers the full power range from 30HP to 300HP in multiple shaft configurations — horizontal dual shaft, right-angle drive, vertical output shaft and splitter configurations. Standard input shaft is 1¾” — 20 spline (ISO 500 1000 RPM PTO) with alternative input configurations available to customer specification. Gear ratios are customisable across the series. Applications include rotary cutters, rotary slashers, rotary mowers and power dividers for tractor-mounted and self-propelled equipment.

Splitter Gearbox Series

Standard agricultural splitter gearbox series with power capacity up to 120HP. Input shaft: 1¾” — 20 spline. Gear ratio customisable to customer requirement. Used in multi-blade rotary mower configurations where a single PTO input drives multiple output shafts to separate cutting deck sections.

Rotary Tiller Gearbox Series

Gearboxes for rotary tiller and cultivator applications — designed for the high-torque, high-shock-load conditions of soil engagement. Configurations include right-angle and inline drive layouts to suit different tiller designs and tractor PTO connection geometries.

Rice Harvester Gearbox Series

Specialised gearbox configurations for rice harvester and combine harvester applications — covering threshing drum drives, cutter bar drives and grain handling transmission components. Produced to customer drawing for integration into harvester assembly lines.

Grain Transportation and Storage Series

Gearbox and drive components for grain augers, conveyors and handling equipment — covering the drive system requirements of grain storage and transportation machinery in both on-farm and commercial grain handling applications.

  • Housing casting — gearbox housings cast in-house from grey iron and ductile iron to dimensional drawing

Finished agricultural gearboxes are inspected, labelled and packed for export in wooden cases or cartons to ocean freight standard. SMI’s export packaging has supported deliveries to agricultural equipment manufacturers and distributors in Canada, Australia, India, Poland and other markets across North America, Asia-Pacific and Europe.
